Title: Closet Confession
Author Name: Kindle Alexander
Publication Date: September 8, 2015
This stand alone version includes Bonus Scenes adding an additional ten thousand words to this novella. Closet Confession was previously released in the Night Shift Anthology.
Dr. Derek Babineaux is intelligent, dedicated, and one of the best ER physicians in the fast-paced world of critical care at Tulane Medical in New Orleans. Always on top of his game, he’s thrown off balance when the newest medical staff member finally unleashes his hidden desires.
Justin Delacroix’s job at the inner city’s busiest hospital might be just what he needs to ease back into civilian life after a long stint in the military. High-performing shifts make working as a trauma nurse at TMC the perfect way to utilize his skills and quick reaction times. There’s only one problem, his attraction for one sexy ER doctor is off the charts, but he has his reasons for not returning Dr. Baby’s night shift advances. Or maybe he doesn’t.
So…I love Kindle Alexander. Everything she’s ever written. When I was offered an ARC I thought I’d won the lottery. But while this is a fantastic short story, it isn’t new. This is the story from the Night Shift: Dirty Things Happen In the Dark anthology published in March with a few added scenes. And this time it hasn’t been published for charity.
As a short story in a great charity anthology, this is a five star read. But as a stand alone? I usually love Kindle Alexander’s slow build character development, the depth, the angst, and the humanity of the writing. The short story format doesn’t allow for much of any of these things.
I enjoyed the cute twist at the end, I loved the two hot, complicated men, but I never felt we really get to fully explore either of them. Especially Justin. I wanted to know everything about his military experiences, his family, his past… but we don’t quite get it here. Derek (Dr. Baby) is also fantastic. I loved his interactions with his team, and really loved his wonderful Aunt Vera. But again, so many things are alluded to but not fully explored. These two men deserve a full length novel!
I’m not too sure the added scenes added much to the story. We get an earlier look at the men (and a tie-in to Secret) and a later look at the men. The added scenes are short and a little disjointed – but still kinda sweet.
I would advise readers to buy this as part of the charity anthology, but I know Kindle Alexander addicts like myself will want the extra scenes added for this re-release. And we’ll all continue hoping for a novel!
I really enjoyed this story. Derek and Justin have amazing sexual chemistry and an even better working relationship.
Aunt Vera – can I have her? She was awesome! Funny, tenacious, pushy but always loving.
The layout of the story was a little strange for me – I think it would have been more effective to read it in the order for which they met and progressed from there. However, I did like that we got to see snippets of their life together.
Overall, this was a sweet story – one about over coming fear, standing up and being proud and love. I was not disappointed in the shortness of the stories either. I thought it gave it a good, overall look at Derek and Justin’s lives.
You won’t be disappointed by the tenderness, love or hotness of these two characters.
