TWO 5 Stars for Stygian by Santino Hassell #MM #Paranormal @SantinoHassell

1.5

Title: Stygian
Author Name & Publisher: Santino Hassell (Dreamspinner Press)
Publication Date & Length: October 26, 2015 – 204 pgs

Synopsis

Jeremy has been isolated and adrift since the death of his brother. Most people just see him as the skinny emo kid who wears eyeliner and plays drums. No one gets him. Nobody tries. He thought the indie rock band Stygian would become his anchor, but—lost in their own problems—they’re far from the family he sought.

Still, hoping to get close to Kennedy, the band’s enigmatic guitarist, he follows Stygian to northern Louisiana for a summer retreat. They had planned to spend six weeks focusing on new music but things go awry as soon as they arrive at the long-deserted Caroway mansion. Tempers flare, sexual tension boils over into frustration, and Jeremy turns away from the band to find a friend in his eerily beautiful landlord Hunter Caroway.

Kennedy suspects there’s something off about the creepy mansion and its mysterious owners, but Jeremy thinks he’s finally found somewhere he fits. It isn’t until Kennedy forces the Caroway’s secrets into the light that Jeremy realizes belonging sometimes comes with a price.

Okay this book was just WOW!!!
It took me a bit to figure out who was what but once I did and the way everything went down was amazing!!
I could not put this book down at all once I started reading it. Jeremy has been through a lot in his life between what happened with his brother and his family legacy. He joined Stygian hoping to be a part of this band. They had problems starting out especially with the way Watts the lead singer of the band treated him. So they decided to get away to work on their music and wow did they pick the wrong place to go.
So much happens which I don’t want to say because I really do not want to spoil this book for anyone, this book is definitely one you need to read for yourself. So many times I wanted to yell through the book at Jeremy what are you doing how do you not see what Hunter is. When he finally wakes up and realizes what is going and sees what Kennedy was telling him all along. I was rooting for them to get the hell out of there as fast as they could.
I don’t know if there will be more books after this one but I really hope there is because it would be interesting to see were they go from here. There was angst, mystery because what the hell was going on with Hunter, Laurel and Quince. Then there was Steam so much Steam between Kennedy and Jeremy when Jeremy finally for a lack of better words pulled his head out. This author Santino Hassell did such a awesome job with this book. Between the paranormal on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what was going on I was grabbed from the start. I honestly was left with wanting more of these characters to see what they are going to do now.
So all together I 100% loved this book!
I would definitely recommend this book!

Imagine Anne Rice’s version of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and you have some idea of the intensely dark, suffocating New Adult paranoia of Santino Hassell’s Stygian.

The setting is Antebellum Southern Gothic. The characters are the neurotic members of a promising indie rock band. The characters span a spectrum from vaguely pitiful to thoroughly abhorrent. Readers are not supposed to like or trust anyone and I really didn’t. The secrets are overwhelming. They seep out in memories, tormented dreams, half-formed thoughts and awkward conversations. Sexuality is fluid. Sex is constant, but impersonal, often violent and flaunted for effect.

I found this story uncomfortable but compelling. Hassell toys with his readers, only offering enough information to torment and alarm, never enough to forewarn. The whole story only comes into focus at the very end of the book when readers and characters are finally able to weave together the final threads of this complex narrative.

This is a dark, angst-filled ride. The blurb I read sold this story as a romance but Hassell foregoes sympathetic characters and refrains from a HEA. I loved the more alternative ending, but I wouldn’t recommend it to romance lovers.

It took me a while to digest this story, but there is much to love. Characters are beautifully observed and carefully drawn. Hassell’s style of writing is elegant and his prose seductive. The story could be described as Urban Fantasy, but really, it plays outside genre. I loved every moment of it but it definitely isn’t for the faint hearted.

Okay this is me being honest when I say while I loved the vampire and human being a couple aspect to this book… Also I really liked the first book in this series too! I just can say honestly because I have seen it done so many times now I am not a huge fan of one of the MC meeting someone else and all the sudden there is attraction to the point the MC almost acts on it.. I just stop seeing the relationship between the two MC’s then and it ends up bringing the book down to me.
That is just my personal opinion..
So beside that you do get action, angst and romance. The way everything worked out was good to. You also get the bad guy who tries to ruin the relationship and does something very bad to one of them. You also see a lot of the characters from the first book and meet some new ones also.
So I am sad to say this book was just not for me…

Excerpt

When it gets dark, he texts Brian that he’s going to be out late, and avails himself of not one but three vampire-human nightclubs set along a dense strip of Chicago nightlife. Going alone to places like this always attracts immediate attention, and he isn’t surprised when he has to pry both humans and vampires off of himself. But he doesn’t mind—the blood from the center is humming in his veins, and that buzz takes on a new dimension every time that he swallows a thimbleful of blood from a donor, which he does at least a dozen times over the course of the evening. When he’s more relaxed, he allows bodies against his own, dancing with strangers until strobe lights become normal and everything outside is too dim and still.

The blood changes the world around him. Every color, every sound and every source of light takes on a life of its own.

He loses track of how many donors he pays. All he knows is he’s spent all of the pocket money that Brian gave him for the weekend.

He feels like a bloated tick. He’s been away too long. Brian. He has to get back to Brian.

I loved this book but that is no surprise to me as S.J. Frost is one of my most favorite MM author. This book was a great way to catch up with all the characters of the Instincts series, but especially Daniel and Ryu. This author just has a way of making the whole story believable even vampires. This story was primarily about Ryu need to protect Daniel but Daniel shows Ryu he can be a fierce fighter.

This book has love, intensity and good old fun all rolled into one amazing story and can’t wait for the next installment.

FourandHalfStars

I will confess to being a bit hesitant to start this book after reading the first two in the series. I wasn’t sure if I could handle any more of the main character, Sei’s, whining and bitching without some kind of movement forward in healing. I was shocked in the best of ways to find this book written from the dual points of view of Kelly, Sei’s best friend and Jamie, his older brother. I had already developed a desire to get to know these two better through the previous books and this delivered beautifully.

The plot and story were wonderful and flowed in a perfect arc from beginning to end. The tension and frustration from and between Kelly and Jamie was believable and well thought out. The overall conflict was amazingly well planned and detailed and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The grammar, structure and formatting were all spot on and other than a few minor errors (which are to be expected) I couldn’t find much at all wrong with this title. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good M/M Romance with a Paranormal twist.

I really enjoyed this. Told from Jamie and Kelley’s perspectives, the third Dominion book is more of a self-contained adventure than the first two books.

Seiran’s body-builder brother Jamie is a more typical leading man, though in this third book the author finally gives him enough layers to make him an interesting m/c. Kelley also develops into more than a sidekick as the story progresses and we learn more about him.

I fell in love with Seiran in the first story – his androgynous appearance and unlikely strengths make him a wonderfully unusual main character. Neither Jamie nor Kelley has the charisma I love in both Seiran and Gabe and it took me a while to embrace the two more ordinary men in Seiran’s group. Lissa Kasey is always an amazing writer, so it doesn’t take her long to to reveal Jamie and Kelley’s extraordinary qualities.

After Seiran’s slightly narcissistic whinging through Reclamation, I found Jamie and Kelley’s story lighter and the story arc easier to follow. The story is simpler than the first two; stranded at an isolated ski lodge, Jamie, Kelley, Sei and Gabe must survive baddies and a huge storm. Compared to Seiran’s internal conflicts in Reclamation this is a true action story with a much faster pace.

I hate it when a fantasy writer borrows or revisits plots from earlier stories to keep a current story going and it does happen here. Old baddies return from the dead and Kasey resurrects the idea of characters acting under magical compulsion once again. No one stays dead in a Dominion story! I would love to see fresh and imaginative plot devices in the next Dominion story.

Ultimately, Kasey continues to develop some brilliant characters. New ones are introduced and we continue to learn more about our original characters. I look forward to watching Con and Sam’s characters develop in the next book.

This isn’t a stand alone story – I think new readers would be quite confused starting with the third book. Start with Inheritance and enjoy the series from the beginning.

So while I did like the magical paranormal parts of this story I have to be honest when I say that these two MC’s were so back and forth fighting their attraction to each other so much by the time they finally gave in I was just not that interested in it anymore sadly..
So Jamie has a brother who is very powerful and who he is very protective of. His brother Sei is also in love with a vampire named Gabe. Well I have to admit the relationship between Sei and Kelly was just so weird. I know friends are close but the way they depend on each other so much and sleep together but not sexually would make being in a relationship with either of these men awkward. At least to me it just felt more like they were together in this book then Kelly was with Jamie or Sei with Gabe. Also some of the things that Sei would say to Jamie was just rude or that was the way it came across to me.
So I did really like parts of this book and the world this author built with these characters. I just got so frustrated with Jamie and Kelly that it made it harder for this story to grab me.

So I am sad to say although I did like parts of this book this book was just not for me…

FourStars

So let me start of this review by saying I really did like this book was something that did bug me.
Okay so with this book you get Sebastien who is still feeling the loss of his partner. Well he meets Kylian at the bar one night and the moment he lays eyes on him he knows there is something special about him. Well as much as I liked learning about them as a couple I thought it was too much them and not enough Jean and Raphael for me. For a book with two couples to work for me I need more then a little part at the end to believe them as a couple and while what little bit I did get from them was awesome I was honestly a disappointed I didn’t get to see more of them together.
So besides that some parts did drag for me little bit. While I liked getting to see these two vampires trying to deal with their loss and moving on I just can’t help feeling a disappointed that there was not more of Jean and Raphael. There was just something about Jean’s character from the other books in this series that grabbed me and I wanted to see him happy with his new partner more then I did get. But besides that I really loved how the author explained the spell and what happened with the souls of their previous partners. I also loved the world this author built in this series.

So all together I really liked this book!
I would definitely recommend this series!

So before going into this book I wanted to let you know not only will you be getting M/M scenes but also M/F and F/F scenes too.  Also before you go into this book you will be getting multiple different POV’s from many different characters in this book too. I know some are okay with those things and some are not so I just wanted to give a little warning. I thought everything personally for me went together perfectly in this book and usually I am not a fan of multiple POV’s but for me it worked in this book.  Yes there were some characters I was not really a fan of, so I honestly did not care for their POV but without reading it I would have been lost reading this book. Also this was the longest book I have read in a long time which I loved. Me being a fast reader it is a refreshing change for a book to take me longer to read. Now that is not without me saying some parts did  drag a little bit for me.
So in this book you get Alain the wizard at first and Orlando the vampire who meet about striking up a alliance between the vampires and wizards.  Which let me stop right there and say what is better then wizards and vampires together I mean really having the two mix together and become couples is just awesome! Okay so Andy lets Orlando drink some of his blood to see if Alain is lying.  That is when it hits Orlando that Alain is his partner the special someone who can make it so Orlando can see the sun again.  Now I could go into every couple in this book that we got a POV from but that would take me awhile their were a lot lol. There is also the special way that only a certain wizard and a certain Vampire can be a partner. Then once you found your partner the way everything slowly grows between the two of them I have to admit the way the author does this was awesome!
I really did love the way the author mixed these two paranormal beings together.  You get a lot of action with this book which has you on the edge on your seat at times and the steam between all these couples was so damn hot!  Then there was the ending which had me in tears, which I will not tell you why but I can tell you I definitely needed a few tissues after reading that part… I don’t want to go much more into it because I do not want to give away any of this book.  This is one you need to read for yourself!
So all together I really loved this book!
I would defiantly recommend this book!

Title: Sunshine is Overrated (The Vamp for Me #3)
Author Name & Publisher: Bailey Bradford (Pride Publishing)
Publication Date & Length: October 20, 2015 – 112 pgs

Synopsis

Life with vamps is never easy.

Abernathy Meyers is already mated to a vamp, Zebulon. It’s just too bad that Zebulon doesn’t give a darn about him. Abbie’s stuck with the man for eternity—or until they die. Some days, Abbie thinks that can’t happen soon enough. He’s tired of being treated badly, yet he doesn’t really want to make his earthly exit yet.

Because he’s longed for another man—another vampire—for years. Forbidden love—is anything more compelling, or more heart-breaking?

There’s a twisted past, a hidden story linking Abbie, Zebulon and the coven leader, Claude.

Claude lives with a fear of turning to dust at any moment. It isn’t reasonable, but he can’t shake it. He’s let his own fears impede his potential happiness, and instead he puts the needs of his coven first, ignoring his own. But if he’s deliberately blind to one particular human’s needs because that human is a mate to another vampire, then is Claude truly leading to the best of his ability?

It’s a tough question for him to answer and soon, he’ll have to make a choice that will affect him and Abbie, forever.

I really thought this book was a great addition to this series.

Finally Abernathy gets to be with someone who will treat him like he is loved and the way he deserves. I was really happy for Claude also because he deserved to be loved and to have a mate who will care for him too.
You get a lot of action and some steam with these two which I loved!
Zeb Abernathy’s mate did something that was horrible for a vampire to do to his mate which also made it possible for Claude to finally claim him which is what should have really happened from the start.
The way they were to together and how you could really feel how much they cared for one another was just awesome! You also get to see more of the characters from the first books. I don’t want to give to much away because this was such a short read. I felt like the author wrote such a awesome story for these two and I did not feel like anything was rushed between them at all.

So all together I really liked this book!

I would defiantly recommend this book!
