Title: Cherish the Land (Land Downs #5)
Author Name & Publisher: Ariel Tachna
Publication Date & Length: June 8, 2015 – 220 pgs

Synopsis

Seth Simms never wanted to be a cowboy, although to listen to his best friend, Jason Thompson, tell it, he isn’t one. He just happens to have lucked out in coming to live on Lang Downs with his brother ten years ago. He found enough stability to finish high school and go off to university, but he never really believed Lang Downs would be the same haven for him that it had become for so many others. He’s too messed up in the head. No one would accept someone with his issues.

All his life, Jason has had one goal: to come home to Lang Downs as resident veterinarian when they need his skills and jackaroo when they don’t. And it means he gets to spend time with Seth during his occasional visits, even though his dream of going from friends to lovers is hopeless since Seth is straight.

When Seth unexpectedly comes home to stay, Jason takes it as the boon it is. But juggling a relationship with another jackaroo and his friendship with Seth isn’t easy, and that’s before Jason realizes how deep Seth’s issues run and how dangerously Seth chooses to cope with them.

**AUDIOBOOK REVIEW**
I have to say that while I really enjoyed the two men and the way their story came together, I didn’t particularly like how much of the Taylor’s story we got. I understand that it was necessary, but sometimes I just couldn’t wait for their part of the story to be over so we could get to our boys.. well, the men they’d grown into.
I loved that we’d seen these boys together in the previous books and as they grew up and then we got to follow along as they got their happy ending. This was a nice conclusion to the series as we got to see everything all wrapped up with a pretty bow and everyone was happy.
I can say that I am a fan of Ariel Tachna after reading this series. She has such a wonderful way of writing romance that also has a hefty dose of reality and work thrown in. The characters are all different and have their own issues to deal with and they do so in their own unique way.
The narrator did an EXCELLENT job with the book and I know I will be looking for more books narrated by William James in the future.

When an Aussie cowboy meets a Texas cowboy, sparks fly. Add in two grieving men, two tough families, an orphaned baby girl and a kidnapping plot for an exciting whirlwind of an adventure.

The loss of Holden’s twin and Lachlan’s sister starts this story in a wash of grief, anger and confusion. But the little girl left behind forces the two cowboys to put her first and figure out a future that works for both families.

I really enjoyed the two leading men in this story and I loved the unusual build up to their romance. Either practicality or pure chemistry brings Holden and Lachlan together but this is the most believable insta-love I’ve read in a long time.

While the action-packed plot is fun, there is far too much going on for this to be believable. Because the plot is so complex, many of the characters are simply sketched in. There were times when I found myself confused by the dual narrative, not immediately knowing whether Lachlan or Holden was narrating.

Overall, this was a fun and exciting story once I stopped querying the details. I enjoyed both the romance and the action.

This book had so much potential. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a bad book, it just didn’t push all my buttons. The plot was good. The story was good, there was just something missing. Holden is the guardian of Chloe, his twin’s daughter, after her parents are killed in an accident. Lachlan finds out weeks later his sister is dead and he has a niece. Both men want to be part of Chloe’s life and before they get a chance to work things out she is kidnapped while both men are trying to put out a barn fire. The entire book is about Chloe, who should she live with, who kidnapped her, should how can they get her back, etc. There wasn’t much focus on Holden and Lachlan so when they just decide to live together and that they were in love it just felt wrong and rushed. The epilogue was good but I wanted more interaction with Holden and Lachlan that didn’t revolve around Chloe.

Trial by Fire was a wonderful sweet story. It was a B.A. Tortuga story meets Harlequin romance book.  I loved that it had everything Harlequin’s have I love reading them.  It was a beautiful love story with a suspenseful twist to it, perfect.

Holden and Lachlan were opposites in many areas but also had the same values.  I felt they worked well as a couple.  And Chloe she brought them all together even the disagreeing Grandparents.

I found the Aussie talk I little hard to follow at times, though I did find calling the Grandparents the oldies quite amusing. Definitely a cute quick story of romance to enjoy.

Trial by Fire is a story that I could imagine really happening. That is what I love most about this book.

Lachlan is an Aussie from Oz. His family owns a huge ranch that that has many different animals and he is in charge of it. He had a sister Addie who met the man she fell in love with and ran away with to Texas with Landon. Three years after she ran away from home, her family, and her security detail she and Landon was killed in an airplane crash and left behind Miss Cloe, their newborn daughter. Once Lachlan finds out about his sister passing away and the baby left behind he jumps on the first plane to Texas to find her.

In Texas Lachlan meets Holden, Landon’s twin brother, who is now Cloes legal guardian. Things start out rocky between the two but before they know it sparks start flying.

BA Tortuga was able to do what a lot of people are not, she was able to make this story believable. The circumstances for these two families coming together, the fear both family feels at possibly not being able to watch Cloe grow up, the heartache they each feel for the loss of their family, the fear, helplessness, and the need for vengeance everyone feels when Cloe is kidnapped, and the way they all pull together to support one another while she is missing was so believable that I could actually picture it happening. I felt all the emotions the characters was feeling throughout the whole book. Including all the love and happiness they found in the end.

Such a wonderful read and I am glad I was able to read it. Can’t wait to read more by BA Tortuga.

This was another romance from the Dreamspun Desires series and so far they have all been great. In this story we meet Lachlan and Holden. This story was captivating and heartwarming which all the stories in the Dreamspun Desires series seem to follow. These stories all follow the theme of HEA and are definitely I feel that each author I read has hit the ball out of the park with these.  This book had everything from angst to conflict and it came across as hot romance. I had an immediate connection with Lachlan but it took me a little while to warm up to Holden but when I did I could see nothing but a HEA for these two amazing men. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys an heartwarming romance because these certainly deliver it.

I normally love BA Tortuga, but this book was just off for me.

Lachlan is coming to meet his long, lost niece and runs in to some trouble when he demands rather than asks to see/meet her.  I did really enjoy the first meeting between Lachlan and the Sheffield family.  Hysterical.

However, when you really dive in to the story, it seemed almost rushed.  There was the angst within the story, but I felt that if this was supposed to truly be a romance, it should have focused more on the two main characters and less on the issue.  Also, the problem within the story seemed somehow unresolved – almost just thrown in to the story to cause trouble.

The chemistry between Holden and Lachlan was also not great – they came together under stress and somehow that’s how a lot of their encounters happened.  It was strange how the relationship developed and while Tortuga did acknowledge that issue, it didn’t really seem to change throughout.

So, while the story had a good message, overall, not my favorite.

This book had a very Harlequin Romance feel to it, which was the point because that’s the concept of Dreamspinner Press’ ;Dreamspun Desire romances.
This one was about Holden and Lachlan, both are brought together when their siblings (who are married to each other) dies in a tragic accident, leaving behind a little baby girl. That baby girl is kidnapped and in the middle of the drama, they fall in love.
This story was really fast paste, but I liked the characters. Holden was short, but a pocket rocket. lol. Of course Lachlan was tall, sexy, rugged and rich, but he was also a caring son and brother. How the situation with the kidnappers were handled was unbelievable in some situations, but hey, I read the whole book straight though so the kidnapping plot wasn’t so bad.
I actually wish that the book was longer.

Publication Date & Length: August 31, 2015 – 125 pgs

Ezekiel Matthers and Brendon Shanahan are about to find out that sometimes all it takes is a subtle breeze to shift the winds of fate.

Ezekiel Matthers is a reclusive man, forcing himself into the exile of his ranch after a violent assault left him wounded. While the scars on the outside have faded, the damage inside is much harder to conquer. Zeke resigns himself to a solitary existence, aside from his sister Enessa and, of course, his mama’s occasional visits.

Brendon Shanahan has a very meddling cousin, Gloria, who is best buds with Enessa Matthers. When the two women convince Brendon that he should hook-up with the reclusive Zeke, a plan is hatched that sets a series of events into motion – with potentially deadly consequences.

Can Ezekiel conquer his fears and accept what Brendon is offering? Or will Brendon walk away, giving up on the love he has waited for? And will the visits from Zeke’s mama – deceased for four years now – help the two men find their way to each other?

Only time will tell, and that may be the one thing the lovers don’t have, because someone is out to destroy everything Zeke and Brendon hold dear – and this time, the bad guy just might succeed.

Poor Zeke to have what happened to him by someone who should have been supportive no matter what just because they were a mean and vindictive person.  I really liked Zeke’s character in this book and how he was stronger by the end of this when he realized there was people who would be there for him.
Brendon I really liked him too.  He was strong for Zeke from the get go and wanted to be there for him to help him through everything that happened.
Now this book has some very hot Scenes from the get go.. A lot of really hot scenes which usually I am not a fan of but in this novella it works.
Once you find out who is behind everything you feel anger and sick to your stomach because without saying who did it and giving away spoilers, you can’t help thinking what a “insert bad word here”.  So not a fan of that person!
I can’t be the only one that finds it so sweet that his ghost visitor is who it is and still visits him too makes sure he is okay.  I loved the paranormal aspect to this story too!
All together I really liked this Novella and would definitely recommend it!

This was a very good start to the series.  It was a sweet read.  The only thing I found a little unbelievable is that they didn’t hardly have a conversation and they were having sex. You think they could have gotten to know each other first, (laughing).

I liked Brendon for how caring he was to Zeke when he needed it the most. Zeke on the other hand was a little harsh to Brendon, trying to push him away. The chemistry between the two did improve as the story went on.

I did love the twist to the story with the scent they kept smelling. I am anxious to read the next installment, maybe it will be about the Sheriff.

Title: When the Dead Speak (Southern Spirits #2)
Author Name & Publisher: Bailey Bradford – Pride Publishing
Publication Date & Length: August 31, 2015 – 125 pgs

Synopsis

The only way to stay alive is to listen when the dead speak…

Sheriff Laine Stenley thinks he might just be losing his mind. Ever since he’d encountered the spirit of his friend’s deceased mother, strange things have been happening. His sheriff’s tin star keeps popping off, his Stetson tends to fly off his head at the most inconvenient times—and then there are the subtle caresses that remind him of a lover’s touch… Something Laine has been without for years—since the violent murder of his partner—and figures to be without well into the future if he wants to retain his position as the sheriff in the small town of McKinton, Texas. Laine doesn’t want to risk his career or his heart ever again, but he may not have a choice, not if he wants to stay alive.

A man who listens to spirits, Severo has come to McKinton to deliver a message of danger. One look at the sexy sheriff and Severo finds himself in a different sort of danger. He’s not ready to find a man who can claim him heart, soul, and body, but ready or not, the attraction that simmers between them is undeniable—and irresistible.

Together, they will race against time, because something evil is coming to McKinton. Severo and Laine must learn to trust each other—and themselves— and listen when the dead speak.

The Southern Spirits series

There’s nothing quite like a Southern drawl or Southern charm—and nothing so loyal as a Southern spirit.

On the surface, McKinton, Texas seems like the stereotypical small town, USA. Smiling faces greet you everywhere you go, and people are quick to lend a helping hand. Most people, that is. Then there’s the ones who let hate rule their lives, who are controlled by their own twisted passions, who are determined to hurt and destroy.

Only love can withstand and triumph over such hatred, but sometimes, even love needs a helping hand. There’s something in McKinton that stands ready; Southern Spirits that intervene at the worst and best of times. With their humor, charm, and death-defying love, these spirits.

Laine the sheriff can’t come out for fear of being fired from his job by the people in town.  His is such a strong character after losing someone he loved, then  working through that while having a stalker and a ghost pulling pranks on him trying to tell him something important.  I really liked his character!
Then there was Sev who can communicate with ghosts and came to town when something pushed him telling him he needed to be there.  He is more of a hook ups only kind of guy until he meets Laine and then its love at first site.  There was just something about Laine that drew him in.
You get a lot of mystery while they track down his stalker and you get to see a lot of Zeke and Brendon which I loved! Plus you get introduced to a few more new characters in this book also.
Altogether I really liked this book!  I would definitely recommend this book!

I really liked this book. I’m really enjoying this series it has me hooked.

I love that the characters from the last book are included once again in this book. I loved the Sheriff and  Sev together as a couple.  Once again it was an instant love romance, but I thought it just worked with these two. I also enjoyed reading the loyalty that is growing among the friends.

I’m loving the paranormal parts of the book. It makes a nice twist to the story.
So far both books were wrapped up very nicely at the end, I hate when the story stops and you are left wondering what happens next, these books have nice epilogue’s.

4 Stars for Love Means… Patience by Andrew Grey #MM #PTSD @AndrewGreyBooks @dreamspinners

0.2

Title: Love Means… Patience (Farm #7)
Author Name & Publisher: Andrew Grey (Dreamspinner Press)
Publication Date & Length: May 23, 2014 – 200 pgs

Synopsis

Years after his discharge from the Marines under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Cody Culver lives in a PTSD-induced world all his own. On a mission, under misconceptions that Geoff and Eli are the enemy, Cody breaks into their farmhouse but is quickly brought back to his senses by a frying pan to the head. After receiving much needed help in the hospital, Cody has nowhere to go. Luckily, kindhearted Eli knows just where to turn.

When Eli asks former Marine Brick Hunter to help, Brick isn’t sure he wants to get involved. But Brick has worked through his own PTSD, and like it or not, he owes Eli a favor. With Cody struggling to rejoin the real world and Brick agreeing to take him in, they discover they have more in common than either of them thought possible.

Though Cody tries to stay in the here and now, he sometimes flashes to unexplainable traumatic events—events that don’t fit his usual war zone delusions. As the “delusions” grow more frequent, it becomes apparent they might not be delusions at all. Cody may have actually witnessed a murder.

This is another gentle, well observed romance from Andrew Grey.  After being discharged from the Marines under DADT, Brick has fought his own battles with alcoholism and settled into a solitary life on his ranch.  But while he had managed to sort himself, he doubts his ability to care for the very damaged Marine Eli brings to his door.

Cody has also been discharged under DADT, but has spent his years since living through a series of delusional “missions” in his tent, living out of his Marine survival pack.  Bringing him firmly back to the present is a huge undertaking.

I really liked the story of Cody’s journey back to himself.  I didn’t find myself fully believing the romance between Brick and Cody – it seemed more opportunistic than romantic.  When Brick allows the sleep-walking, delusional Cody into his bed, it also felt a little predatory. I loved Cody – but he sounded much younger than someone who had served in both Gulf wars.  I believed Brick was in his forties, but Cody seemed so damaged and vulnerable that he came across as very young.

I’m not sure the whole murder mystery plot was necessary.  I have this hang-up about the lazy m/m plot device where one of the leads is rushed to hospital, prompting a declaration of undying love.  Andrew Grey usually writes too well for this – but he only narrowly avoids the cliche this time.

This isn’t necessarily a sexy book.  There is a little bit of sex, but nothing wild and nothing graphic.  It is a story of healing, of romance and emotional connections.

By now, most m/m readers know Andrew Grey.  This doesn’t necessarily stand out for me, but it is a satisfying emotional story – a sweet romance between two hot men.

This is a dark, troubling and gritty story. Providing a horrifying look at life for gay cowboys in 1950’s Texas, it offers insights into the discrimination faced by anyone other than straight, white men. I think I was crying by the second or third chapter.

There were a couple of time changes at the start of the story that I struggled to follow, but otherwise, Chip and Simon’s story is told slowly and carefully. The central relationship isn’t necessarily romantic, but it is realistic. Closeted for survival, there isn’t much room for romance, but the two men fall hard for each other in a painful, believable way.

I really loved Simon’s character. His way with the horses, his kindness to the vulnerable – he is what every girl imagines a cowboy to be. I was never as keen on Chip – actually, part of me wanted Simon to end up with Manuel. I know Chip was flawed, troubled and human, but I just didn’t see what Simon saw in him.

By about three-quarters of the way through, Simon and Chip’s prospects began to feel hopeless and I was needing to put the book down. Fortunately, the end is really beautiful. Without spoiling the story, I was really impressed with the way the author manages to lighten the book at the end without compromising the realism she has worked so hard for.
