4.5 Stars for Dark Warrior by Lily Harlem #MM #MixedRace @Lily_Harlem @Totally_Bound

Title: Dark Warrior
Author Name: Lily Harlem
Publication Date: April 2015

While some passions live on the surface, others—wilder, darker passions—have to be kept buried deep.

Dr. Leo Rotherham is following his calling by working in rural Kenya for the charity Medics On Hand. While he expected a primitive way of life and limited medical supplies, what he doesn’t bargain on is falling for handsome village warrior, Malik.

Malik is well respected, knowledgeable and loyal to his tribe. He’s also beautiful, brave, modern and, much to Leo’s dismay, married—isn’t he?

No, it turns out Malik is as free as the animals that roam the African plains at night.

Soon the tension is building between the two men and Leo isn’t sure if he’s coming or going. Whenever he’s around Malik he can’t help but notice the reflected look of lust in his eyes and feel the longing sizzling between them.

Malik stands too close, not close enough. Forbidden attraction simmers between them and the need grows to dizzying heights. But dare they admit to each other what it is they want? And are they brave enough to act on their desires and be honest about their lust? One thing is for sure, a passion this big, this powerful, can’t be contained and it’s all going to explode in the most spectacular of ways.

FourandHalfStarsThis is a fantastically moving story about a doctor working for a medical charity and the African nurse he meets in a tiny Kenyan village hospital.Still nursing his wounds after the break-up of a long term relationship, Leo volunteers to spend a month at a hospital in a Kenyan village.  Malik is a hunter, teacher and nurse, working alongside Leo in the hospital.

The relationship between the two men is tender and the author’s descriptions of the Kilimanjaro foothills are beautiful.  She explores rural poverty sensitively and poignantly, without pity or sentimentality.  Malik and the people of his village retain dignity and humanity.

There were only a couple of niggles that kept me from giving this a five star rating.  Malik loses his African phrasing and vocabulary at times, sounding very Western, especially when the two men become intimate.  Details about Leo’s past medical training and experience also seemed somewhat inconsistent at times.

But honestly, I fell hard for both of these men:  the patient, humble doctor and the fierce, moral and gentle nurse.  I love the way the author brings Kenya to life, and I love the realism of the tiny village hospital, its patients and its staff.

Her books are a mixture of full length novels and short stories, some are one offs, some are sequels or part of a series (all can be enjoyed as stand-alone reads). What they all have in common are colourful characters travelling on everyone’s favourite journey — falling in love. If the story isn’t deliciously romantic and down and dirty sexy, it won’t be written, at least not by this author. So with the bedroom door left well and truly open you are warned to hang on for a steamy, sensual ride – or rides as the case might be!
