Title: Bear, Otter, & The Kid (Bear, Otter, & the Kid #1)
Author Name & Publisher: T. J. Klune (Dreamspinner Press)
Publication Date & Length: August 12, 2011 — 350 Pages

Synopsis

Three years ago, Bear McKenna’s mother took off for parts unknown with her new boyfriend, leaving Bear to raise his six-year-old brother Tyson, aka the Kid. Somehow they’ve muddled through, but since he’s totally devoted to the Kid, Bear isn’t actually doing much living—with a few exceptions, he’s retreated from the world, and he’s mostly okay with that. Until Otter comes home.

Otter is Bear’s best friend’s older brother, and as they’ve done for their whole lives, Bear and Otter crash and collide in ways neither expect. This time, though, there’s nowhere to run from the depth of emotion between them. Bear still believes his place is as the Kid’s guardian, but he can’t help thinking there could be something more for him in the world… something or someone.

This review is for the audiobook version of this book.

Bear, Otter and the Kid is a charming, funny, and romantic book. It’s narrated beautifully by Sean Crisden. He really brings the story to life, improving on an already great book through his performance.

This is such a heartwarming story about family, love, and learning to trust. The characters are wonderful. The intimate and familiar way Bear tells his story is engaging and amusing. I feel like there’s a special art in creating funny and dramatic book, and TJ Klune does a great job with it.

My one complaint about this book is that sometimes the pace seems unnecessarily slow. The inner monologs and daydreams are fun and revealing devices, but I feel like they are used a bit too much.

Even though this is the first part of a series I feel it can also stand alone quite well. But that said, I’m looking forward to moving on to the next one.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking to laugh and cry and swoon.

This book was a real Rollercoaster ride! So many roadblocks, starts and stops. Bear has struggled a whole lot since his mother took off leaving him with his little brother Kid (Tyson). Both of them have real issues with abandonment and self worth. But Bear does have some great support even if he doesn’t fully acknowledge what it is. The Kid is the comedy relief in this story when it gets really heavy. This story tackles some serious subjects but the characters really make it for me. Otter is the real heart of this story and you pull for him so much. I just wanted to grab him and hug him so badly. Bear is faced with even more trials and yeah I wanted to slap him a few times but I understood his motivations.

This story really will touch your heart and make you pull for the characters. Even with some terrible poetry sometimes. You don’t really settle into this story because everything is moving up and down so quickly and in such a short amount of time. I finished this story in one sitting I just couldn’t put it down. It made me cry, made me yell and giggle at the silly kid. Since all of the characters are on the younger side I understood some of the issues they brought on themselves even when I wanted to hit them upside the head. Just breath and roll with it. You won’t be disappointed. Looking to pick up the following books just to spend a little more time with Bear, Otter and the Kid and see how all of their stories unfold. This story does have a HEA so you won’t be left hanging.

NEW RELEASE: TWO 5 stars and 3.5 stars for Risk Aware by Amelia C. Gormley @ACGormley #MM #BDSM

29231360

Title: Risk Aware
Author Name & Publisher: Amelia C. Gormley (Riptide Publishing)
Publication Date & Length: May 9, 2016 — 323 Pages

Synopsis

Tattoo artist Geoff Gilchrest is convinced his life is some sort of cosmic joke. Why else would a hemophiliac also be a masochist? He’s given himself more than one elbow bleed since puberty just doing what guys do when alone and bored, so forget about whips and chains. How many partners would contemplate playing with someone even a mild flogging could kill?

Gallery owner Robin Brady knows he can deliver what Geoff needs: to be taken to the edge of danger but never beyond. But Robin came to Saugatuck to get away from the leather scene and heal from a betrayal by his former sub, so he’s not sure he should get involved with Geoff. His ambivalence isn’t helped by the fact that Geoff’s unwillingness to communicate about his well-being hits Robin in some very raw places.

Geoff’s hemophilia isn’t the obstacle he thinks it is. Instead, a lack of trust—on both their parts—is what could end them before they have a chance to begin.

Triggers: Severe medical condition, false accusations, risky BDSM play

Geoff and Robin make a great pair.  I thought that they had great qualities as a couple.  However, I had a very hard time liking Geoff as himself.  Then you have Robin, who is supposed to be more in control, but in reality, he seems just as on edge as Geoff.

When Geoff and his friend go to a gay weekend getaway, he meets Robin.  Right away there is a kindred spirit between those two.  However, Robin can sense something is off a little and Geoff is selfish enough to risk his own health just to fulfill a fantasy that he’s had.

Because of Geoff’s Hemophilia, he knows that despite his desire to be masochistic, he must be very careful.  One wrong move could kill him.  But, Geoff doesn’t really communicate well throughout the story and it is apparent how immature and selfish he is when the thought doesn’t cross his mind that whomever he’s playing with could take a very real risk themselves.

Robin is a different type of sadist.  Once he knows about Geoff’s condition, he tries to educate himself in order to help Geoff fulfill his masochistic tendency, all while fulfilling his own desire to dominate and inflict pain.

I loved the idea behind Geoff’s artistic talent and loved that he wanted to find someone with just the right touch for him.  It felt like something was missing when the idea never really developed.

The sexy talk and “fake” or illusion play that Robin gives Geoff is very sensual and sexy.  If you can look past the selfishness of Geoff, the timidness (rightly so) of Robin, then you can see a true relationship begin to develop.  However, I felt that the story was left with a lot of unanswered questions and unfinished parts.

The blurb grabbed my attention right away and I couldn’t wait to read it! I fell in love with Geoff right away but hated how much he thought his condition was a hindrance for everything. Robin just melted my heart, he felt something for Geoff right away and wasn’t afraid of his condition. When Robin started researching stuff and was willing to try new things and give Geoff everything he could to make him happy I just fell more in love with him. The chemistry between these two was awesome. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with both of them and didn’t want the story to end. Beautiful love story and shows just what someone will do when they really care for you.

FiveStars

This is by far one of the best BDSM books I have ever read. Not because it is nothing but heavy into the scene the entire time but because the scenes are so outside the norm that they are touching and really this is probably the first BDSM book that I could actually say I wanted to be the character in the scene.

Geoff is a hemophiliac and a masochist. Which obviously is not your usual combination since a lot of BDSM activities could kill him. But this is a release he really needs and how he needs these things is really well explained. Enter Robin who has been in the BDSM lifestyle and it nearly costs him everything he cares about. So taking a step back from it he inadvertently meets Geoff. Geoff is taking risks that step outside the sane considering his condition and Robin really does need to save him from himself in a lot of ways. The connection these two make is HOT but at the same time really charming. They have some serious stumbling blocks along the way but the play they have during their scenes is erotic and sensual. It’s this aspect of their story that I wasn’t expecting but with the limitations of Geoff’s condition, Robin has to work outside the norm you see in a lot of BDSM stories.

This book gave me a completely different look at BDSM that for whatever reason I hadn’t seen fully explored and it kept me engaged the entire time and as I said really appealed to me in a way that other BDSM books haven’t. So if you want a touching and endearing BDSM book with a few tears and some seriously hot moments. You will want to pick up this book!

THREE 5 Star, THREE 3 Star, ONE 4 Star, and ONE 4.5 Star Reviews for Believing Blue (Manchester Menage Collection #3) by Nicole Colville #Menage #MM

CoverTitle: Believing Blue (Manchester Menage Collection #3)
Author Name & Publisher: Nicole Colville (Hidden Pleasures)
Publication Date & Length: April 20,. 2016 – 525 pgs

Synopsis

Is there a fated path we follow, or is it simply a series of coincidental events?

Police officer Kellan Howard is rumoured to have spent too much time in sub-zero temperatures, leaving him with a block of ice for a heart and women lining up to help thaw it. Mountain climbing is his only love, leaving no time for a relationship, and although meaningless sex satisfies his physical need, it’s empty. When he attends a fatal traffic accident, he didn’t expect his entire life to change. Along with a final message, Kellan is offered something else from the dying man: the chance to fall in love. Kellan’s never considered being with a man, but when he meets Valentino, he’s instantly drawn to him.

Suffering from crippling agoraphobia, talented Italian artist Valentino has a solitary existence, only experiencing life outside the house through his partner Stuart. When their relationship comes to an abrupt end, Kellan helps ease his suffering. A deep bond binds the two men together, and the sexual tension can’t be denied, but Valentino questions if the distance between their very different lives is too much, and if they can bridge the gap by themselves.

Ballet dancer Blue has a vibrant personality which demands attention, but his humour and courageous attitude are a shield. Blue’s good at making others believe in themselves, but what he needs is someone to believe in him. He could be the bridge both men are looking for, but Blue’s never allowed anyone to get too close, and when Kellan and Valentino enter his life, he desperately tries to protect his heart and his secrets.

When all three meet, the chemistry is undeniable, but each have fears about moving forwards. Together, they learn love comes in many forms. It can’t be restrained or labelled, and it doesn’t always appear in the way you first imagined.

**Blue is a standalone book, and although characters from previous books do make an appearance, it won’t spoil their stories if you choose to read them afterwards.**

Triggers: Death

OK, let me start by stating that I have not read the previous books in this series.

Next, let me say that if you’re in to really long stories that take about 45% to get in to the actual story, then this is your book.  However, it just wasn’t for me.  I had a very hard time connecting with the characters and really, the only one I enjoyed was Kellan.

You start out with this tragic event that is supposed to push two of the men together.  In reality, I thought that it was more of a barrier to them figuring out that they wanted each other.  There was this constant ghost between them.  And, while the writing wasn’t poor, it was incredibly slow.  I literally kept checking the status bar to find out if I had moved at all in the story.

Then you have Blue… Oh Blue.  Drama like the Kardashian’s could only dream up.  He was the most annoying character in this book for me.  Always with something to harp about, and although I know that for the most part it was a front for his own insecurities, it just became too much.

I did like how Colville split the men up in this story.  You were given a little bit at a time rather than the whole group of them.  However, again, when they came together, they just didn’t really gel for me.

Unfortunately, despite wanting to enjoy and like the characters in this story, I just couldn’t picture their story.

ThreeStar

I was exciting to read this when I read the synopsis…and was sadly disappointed. I love MMM…and this one wasn’t very convincing at ALL. I think giving it 3 stars was generous of me, actually, but I liked the cover, I liked the beginning, and I give the author props for writing over 500 pages for this book. Too bad it was 300 pages too long in my HONEST opinion.
I really liked the plot, well the plot that was written in the description for this book, but I hate it when an author brings the 3rd partner in the relationship in the middle of the book and all 3 of them didn’t even realize they knew each other til like 80% of the book. Meaning there wasn’t a 3some til 80% of the book. I disliked that very much. I felt cheated. I almost gave up half way when I realized that the menage wasn’t going to happen any time soon and I was on like page 250.
All I got was Kellan and Valentino together, then not together. Characters from previous books taking over the pages and Blue’s annoying thoughts. I admit that I thought that Blue was cute at first…but after 525 pages, he got really annoying.
*sigh* This book did not need to be 525 pages. Why the heck was it that long? I don’t mind long books, but only if the story draws me in and this didn’t. I ain’t gonna lie, I skipped some pages after reaching 50% of the book cause I just wanted to get to the 3some already and even that disappointed me.
If the other books are like this one, I’m not reading them, sorry.

Honestly, this book was way too long. I was skimming so much because it was just too wordy and at times didn’t hold my attention at all. I struggled to get to the 50% mark. The blurb just caught my attention and I had to read it. Unfortunately I should have just stuck with the blurb. I wanted to like it, I wanted to connect with the characters and fall in love with all of them and feel everything they did, it just didn’t happen for me with this book.

This is a great addition to the Manchester Menage Collection. You get to see all the previous characters and how they are doing and actually wrap up a few of their loose ends while the story of these three men unfold. It’s great to get Blue’s story after falling a little in love with him from the previous story!

I don’t think you could find three so very different men and make it work like this story does. Kellan is solid and steady but self contained. Valentino is a beautiful artist who is suffering deeply. Blue is enigmatic, energetic and inside crushed by self doubt. Through tragedy Kellan and Valentino come together to struggle through the aftermath of true loss. I was unable to deny the absolute attraction these two have and it’s well written given what is happening in the story. It’s erotic and consuming but can’t block out the real problems that come from the devastation after such a tragedy. Blue with his outrageous personality and attitude makes for some great laughs even while I wanted to shake him sometimes during the story but being such a smart ass. But he really is the balm that Kellan and Valentino need. This story really is a marathon and not a sprint so it builds slowly to the pay off for these three men. While I would have loved a bit more at the end, the end really is endearing and shows how fate sometimes steps in and puts the right person in your life at the right time.

This story is a bit heartbreaking at points and yeah sometimes makes you want to scream. However it’s so well written you can’t put it down because you want to see these three men come together so badly and find some happiness and love.

FourandHalfStars

You will tear up, nod to agree, and definitely laugh with the humor that was set forth in this beautiful story about loss, hope, believing in yourself, finding love and to love again.

Valentino, completely broke my heart from the start through to the end. I truly felt that this story was about him than about Blue. I loved Blue and his constant manners. A lot of people in this world could learn a thing or two from him. And his humor and love of life…I laughed so much with him. Kellan was just a solid rock all around. These three men were so completely opposite yet were all the missing pieces in each other lives to become a whole.

Most of the story you learn about each one and how they come together. Kellan was the common link until the end, then you find out it was Blue. But to me, it will always be Tino who was my favorite. Tino was such a strong man. I felt every tear, every breath, every sorrow, every fear from him. I loved how these men came together to support and push each other. The love was real and deep.

This was a great addition to the Ménage Collection. This can be read as a standalone but worth reading them in order.

I have found my next go to book. I cried. I laughed. I laughed until I cried. The story is based in England but it isn’t hard to follow along with the wording. There are many elements to this story that must be touched upon. I hope I remember them all.

As a police officer, Kellan is called upon to help when needed. He also volunteers for many extra shifts because he has no one at home waiting for him when he gets done with work. The weather has taken a drastic turn, bringing snow too quickly, causing the roads to become dangerous to be out on. He’s on his way back to town when he happens upon two officers from neighboring Manchester. They are stuck on the slick road so Kellan must help them push their car. As the three men are nearing a dangerous turn they spot a car that has crashed into the rocks. They work desperately for hours to free the driver. As the rescue team works to free Stuart, the driver, he talks to Kellan about his boyfriend Valentino. Sharing stories and secrets. Unfortunately, Stuart doesn’t survive his injuries and dies shortly after being rescued.

Valentino has lived the several years of his life through the eyes of Stuart. Never leaving the home that he and Stuart had come to share. When Kellan arrived on his doorstep, Valentino was terrified. He has been a loner for so long, he doesn’t know how to interact with anyone other than Stuart and the owner of the art gallery. His family disowned him when he was 15. He has pushed everyone else away. But, every chance Kellan gets he is banging on Valentino’s door, asking for acceptance into his life.

Blue. What can I say about Blue? He has such a strong spirit. A spirit that anyone could be jealous of. He has a supportive and loving family as well as friends. You can’t help but be his friend. You’re drawn to him when you walk into a room. Except for Kellan. Kellan can’t seem to get on Blue’s good side no matter what he does. Every time they meet its oil and water. Until Kellan has to rescue a very drunk Blue from a man who wants to rape him. The two men are able to set aside their differences and soon their relationship starts.

The three men are brought together when Blue is requested by Valentino to be his model. It is Blue who eventually brings Valentino and Kellan back together. And it is Blue who keeps the throuple together when all the dust has settled.

~Kris

FiveStars

For me, Blue, Kellan and Valentino are the most interesting characters in this series.  Kellen and Valentino meet through tragedy; Blue is Valentio’s muse and Kellen works with Blue’s friends.  The relationships are complicated and the men are wonderfully original.

The triad is well balanced here and it was easy to understand the balance created by the threesome that wouldn’t have existed for two of the men as a couple.  I enjoyed the lack of angst and drama in these relationships, though the tension between Blue and Kellan at the start felt a little exaggerated.

Despite some incredibly heavy topics and some serious issues each man has to work through, this remains a fun, sexy story.  I challenge any reader to refrain from sobbing through the first thirty pages, but the grief and strain at the start of the story is tempered by hope and humour as the story progresses.  Once these men get to know each other, there is fantastic heat between all three.

My only reservation about the story is that I’m not sure the men’s ages worked for me completely.  Party boy Blue feels much younger than the other two, but he is only supposed to be a few years younger than Kellan.  In the same way, Valentino, mourning his life partner, felt considerably older than Kellan.  But all three men are supposedly in their early to mid twenties which didn’t quite fit for me.

This story linked in to the two previous stories more than the second one did and I enjoyed revisiting characters from earlier books.  This is such a great series and this third book is a wonderful addition.

~Sarah

FiveStars

If you do not believe in fate, once you read this book maybe you will. This is a book about loss, about love, about acceptance, and about fate.

Kellan is a police officer and is straight. One night on a bad snow storm him and two other police officers come across a man that is a terrible vehicle accident, Stuart. Stuart knows he is not going to make it and Kellan will not leave his side. Stuart tells Kellan about his sole mate and the love of his life and tells Kellan to go to him and they will find love in each other.

Valentino is the man that Stuart was talking about and Valentino turns out to be exactly what Stuart said he was and so much more. Of course Valentino is heart broken and grieving. Even though he is heartbroken he and Kellan start to get closer and Kellan and start to fall for one another till Valentino pushes him away.

Kellan is heartbroken but respects his wishes and eventually starts to move on with Blue, but once all of them come together unintentionally sparks start to fly between the three of them and they decide to become a trio. But nothing that is easy is worth it and there are so many obstacles these three men have to overcome to start towards their happily ever after.

I truly enjoyed this book. I cried with these characters. I got mad about some of the things these characters went through in the past. I laughed with them and I routed for them.

Blue is my favorite of the three I think. He is the light for all of them. He is so full of life that is hard to not to be happy when you are around him. He is full of spunk and he takes no BS off of anyone. He is just him and it is a take it or leave it type of person.

Kellan is the one that hold them all together. He is the one that is caring, compassionate, and at some points the peace keeper. He is the voice of reason and he loves these two men unconditionally.

Valentino is the one that makes these two men realize that they are worth the love they are given. He shows these two men how beautiful they are both inside and out. He is also such a strong individual and just does not realize it.

I would highly recommend this book because it is so amazing.

Kellan gritted his teeth together and stood up. “I won’t leave you like this.”

“Get the hell out!!” Valentino gripped the base of his nose, rubbing it gruffly. His eyes snapped shut, but not quickly enough.

Kellan spotted the misty glimmer in them. Whether his tears were caused through sheer frustration or sadness, it didn’t matter. Kellan couldn’t leave. He’d have to be forced from the house by an armed response team. “No!” Kellan held his shoulders firmly. “I won’t leave you.”

“God-damn it, Kellan.” Valentino’s eyes flew open, and Kellan’s hands were thrust from him with a jerk. “You’re such a pain in the arse.” He leaned forward, almost hissing his words out against Kellan’s lips. “Why don’t you just leave me alone, huh? Why do you continue to push me when I don’t want it?”

Kellan’s body brushed against Valentino’s firm flesh, and he cursed himself for responding so quickly. “Don’t lie and say you don’t want me here when I know damn well what you want.” Kellan didn’t really know for sure, but there was a heat and need between them which couldn’t be ignored anymore. Valentino needed him, and Kellan was willing to hand over whatever he could to fulfil that need.

Valentino turned those teal green eyes on Kellan’s, a soft growl spilling from his lips.

“You’re a fucking tease! A tease, Kellan.”

Kellan was about to come back with a response, like how he had no idea he’d been teasing Valentino, but he was halted by two hands on either side of his head and Valentino’s mouth being forced against his. He stopped breathing, too stunned to act.

Valentino had his face clasped tightly to his, those full lips hitting Kellan’s hard and fast, his tongue licking and seeking entrance inside.

A white hot shot of lust spiked through his body and every thought other than being against this writhing, sexy man disappeared. Kellan grabbed hold of Valentino’s hips, rushing him up against the wall and taking ownership of his mouth with a grunt.

Valentino bit down on his lip causing Kellan to pull back. As soon as they separated, Valentino had the upper hand and was spinning him around, holding him against the wall and spreading his thighs open with his knee, rubbing up against the hard length of Kellan’s cock. Despite knowing he could easily restrain Valentino and take control back, he didn’t want to. He wanted this from him. “You know what I want?” Valentino breathed out through their kisses. “You want to give me what I need, Kellan?”

This is rather enlightening story that intrigued me from the beginning. It gave me an insight into the male porn industry I would never of had and now I want to read the other books with these connected characters. This is the third book in the Perspectives but can be read as a stand alone.

This story covers an awful lot of serious subjects and does it well. There are a lot of stumbling blocks for Jon and Isaac in this story. You don’t feel cheated by covering so much and you can see how much both of them have to learn. Some people may struggle with the hang ups that each other these characters have but in my opinion the author did a great job tackling these issues. Isaac is a shut in after witnessing severe abuse as a young child as well as abuse from his father. Jon struggles with self image and overcoming an eating disorder just to touch on a few of the things that make each of these two very strong characters.

I really enjoyed watching these two come together and finally get to their HEA. There are a lot of cute and funny moments to help balance the tough times and as I mentioned before I will now be looking to read the other books in the Perspectives series.

Jon studied him, his gaze taking in…something. “May I ask you something?”

“Of course.” His chest flushed with anticipation.

“How do you feel when you’re with me?”

Isaac tried to push aside the anxiety still attempting to blur his thoughts, an old friend that wanted to be part of the conversation. Only anxiety wasn’t allowed in, not this time. He shuffled through different words, emotions and adjectives, searching for the one that best described how he felt about Jon. How Jon made him feel, despite being a near-stranger, bigger, stronger and far more experienced in pretty much everything. Jon still made him feel… “Safe,” Isaac said.

Jon’s eyebrows crept up. The corners of his mouth quirked into something not quite a smile.

“Really?”

“Yes. The first time I saw you on my security feed, I noticed how beautiful you were.” His cheeks warmed.

Jon flat out grinned. “Yeah?”

“You’re kind and patient, and I feel safe because you don’t try to fix me, and you don’t act like I’m broken. My family thinks I’m broken, and I don’t want them to fix me. I just…” Something in Isaac shifted, accepting this new truth. “I need to feel safe, Jon. That’s why I hide. But you make me not want to hide.”

Jon’s eyes glittered. His expression melted into something so warm, so sweet, that it burned in Isaac’s blood in a way he didn’t understand at all. The strange sensation urged him to reach out, to initiate contact of some kind. Deep-rooted fear kept Isaac still, unable to make that first move. Unable to do anything except soak in the wonderment on Jon’s face.

“I think that’s the greatest compliment I’ve ever gotten,” Jon said. His voice was hoarse, strange.

Almost difficult to hear, so Isaac paid more attention to his lips. “Is it cheesy to say your strength makes me want to be better too?”

Isaac shook his head. “I’m not strong.”

“You’re stronger than you think. You proved that by letting me and Henry in two weeks ago. You proved it again by going out to rescue a kitten. Twice, by the way. You told me you want to get better, get into the world, and that takes a fuck-ton of courage when you’ve lost as much as you have. I know it won’t be easy, but I still want to help you do that.”

“I know you do. I want that too.”

For a short story this is an awesome  book.

There are two main characters in this book, Aden and Lockland. Both men are fire fighters. On a precarious call out Lockland’s leg becomes trapped under a beam that fell. Aden refuses to leave Lockland. So between Aden and their Lieutenant Sam they was able to free Lockland’s leg against the Cheif’s orders to evacuate. Once the rescue is over and Lockland returns to the fire house, he and Aden could not hold back until they was home.

It is truly hard to portray all the emotions in a short story that authors are able to portray in a novel but Shaye Evans was able to do so in this short story. Because of her graphic writing I was able to feel the fear that Aden felt when he thought he lost Lockland. I was literally holding my breathe as I read on to see if they would be able to get Lockland out of the fire. Then I felt the love they have and have had for the past five years for each other once they was reunited after Lockland returned from the hospital along with the relied of him being safe and sound. And last but not least I was able to feel the sadness with them over the loss of their families when they was disowned by their families for loving one another. That is defiantly not an easy feat with a short story but again Shaye Evans accomplished that and so much more with this book. Amazingly job well done

This story had a lot of promise. I mean, what isn’t hot about two firemen?? And a third too? Whew! Only… It missed the mark for me.
While I thought the story was actually well written and was fairly believable, there were some down points that just ruined it for me.
First, I found a LOT of errors in the way that the fire house/call was handled. Second, when it came to the sex scenes, I found myself asking ‘How would that be possible?’ more than “oooh that was hot.” Seriously, can you put your forehead to the person behind you in a doggy-style position? Third, there was quite a few repetitive words that really ruined the flow of the book for me. For example, the flames licked the wallpaper a few times in one scene alone. A mix up of words would’ve really helped keep the flow going better in my opinion.
Overall, however, I didn’t think the story was terrible. I think with a few fixes in how the firefighter procedure was written/handled along with a bit more thought put into the physical situations and if things would actually be possible (and at one time I thought there was actual penetration, but there wasn’t or was there? It was confusing as heck.) I think the writer could write a book that would really suck the reader in and keep their attention with a bit of change.
I would certainly give them another shot in the future.

This review is for the audiobook read by John Solo.

I really enjoyed this story. I was pleasantly surprised to find twists and turns in what I thought might be a fairly predictable story. It was lighthearted, witty, and fun.
Chris and Jesse are well developed and lovable characters. And I found Jesse’s step-mother to be a really great supporting character. The story shows a side of romance that can be fumbling and awkward, crashing and burning at times. But something beautiful can still be salvaged from the wreckage.

This is read well by John Solo, but I don’t feel his performance of Chris’ voice really fits. It was enough of an issue for me that it took away slightly from what was a very enjoyable story otherwise.
All in all, I recommend this book, but I feel I would have enjoyed it more in text as opposed to audio.

I’ve had reservations about Dreamspinners’ new Desires range and I managed to avoid them until I saw Shira Anthony’s name.  And while Harlequin romances were never my thing, I love Shira Anthony’s writing.  And I really enjoyed this story.
I acknowledge that this is full of implausible soap-opera cliches I expect from Harlequin.  Wealthy socialites, scheming mothers and second wives, the poor little rich boy… this is a complete guilty pleasure read.  But when you add Shira Anthony’s skills into the mix, the characters are realistic and interesting.  Our poor little rich boy is a steampunk /Sci Fi author working as a barista and I really liked him.  The supporting cast is perfectly crafted and I found myself fully invested in this romance.
So yes.  A simple, guilty pleasure,  this was a fun, fast read.  This is almost tongue in cheek drama with a slow burn romance and relatively little sex.  If you’re in the mood for feel-good fluff, if you’re looking for a book to read in the bath with a glass of white wine – this is just about perfect.

This book was so amazing. Shira Anthony certainly out did herself on this one.

Chris is a struggling author who lives with his two best friends that engaged. He works as a barista during the day and writes at night or durning his spare time. He is trying to get a publishing house to pick up his trilogy but has yet been able to make that happen.

Jessie is a CEOS of the company his grandfather started and is a happy bachelor or so he he thinks. Jessie’s grandfather passed away and in his will he left the stipulation that Jessie had to marry someone by the one year anniversary of his passing or he would not inherit the company he was left in the will.

Chris meets Jessie at a reading he is doing of one of his books and Jessie and him become friends. Jessie proposes that Chris marry him to help him meet the stipulations of the will and in return for staying married to him for one year Chris will receive 1 million dollars and he can work on his books in the process.

Somewhere along the way Chris starts having feeling for Jessie but he pushes it away with excuse after excuse.

I have to say that I am truly amazed that Shira was able to pull this book off as amazingly as she did because I found myself rooting for Jessie and Chris as if I knew them personally. I am not ashamed that I cried more then a couple of times while reading this book. I felt the hurt and heartache that Chris and Jessie both felt and I also found myself smiling and cheering them on through the happiness.

This book honestly brought so many emotions in me and I felt as if the things going on in this book were happening right in front of me. That is not an easy feat but Shira was able to pull that off and then some. And the story line in this book was gripping and would not let you go till then end and even then I found myself wanting there to be more.

This was as I said an amazing book and I definitely would recommend this book to others

If you are trying to get into the M/M genre and really enjoy the Historical Romance story of hasty required marriage plot this is the book for you. I read a lot of genres and Historical Romance is one of my go-tos to unwind and drift away but I haven’t really been able to get into the M/M Historical books. This book is a great example of taking something very old and done a lot and making it feel very new. The author did an amazing job of blending two types of story and making one great book.

Jesse needs to marry to secure control of all he has known and worked for. Chris is a struggling author who catches Jesse’s eye. Enter now the quick courtship and hasty wedding. All the usual historical hang ups are evident in the story but done in a refreshing way that keeps you reading just waiting to see if these two can stumble along and find true love and get their HEA.

This story could have felt like just another contrived love story but the author did such a great job making what is an overdone story in the Historical M/F Romance genre feel all new and exciting. All the same components are there but Shira made them appealing again. As I said before if you are looking to see if you like the M/M genre and have enjoyed Historical Romance, this book is a good one to start with. The chemistry between Jesse and Chris is hot and a good introduction to M/M for Historical book lovers. Definitely give this one a try. I know I will be reading more from this author in the future.

Author Name & Publisher: Amy Lane (Dreamspinner Press)
Publication Date & Length: December 3, 2014 – 136 pgs

Synopsis

Adam Macias has been thrown a few curve balls in his life, but losing his VA grant because his car broke down and he missed a class was the one that struck him out. One relative away from homelessness, he’s taking the bus to Sacramento, where his cousin has offered a house-sitting job and a new start. He has one goal, and that’s to get his life back on track. Friends, pets, lovers? Need not apply.

Finn Stewart takes one look at Adam as he’s applying to Candy Heaven and decides he’s much too fascinating to leave alone. Finn is bright and shiny—and has never been hurt. Adam is wary of his attention from the very beginning—Finn is dangerous to every sort of peace Adam is forging, and Adam may just be too damaged to let him in at all.

But Finn is tenacious, and Adam’s new boss, Darrin, doesn’t take bullshit for an answer. Adam is going to have to ask himself which is harder—letting Finn in or living without him? With the holidays approaching it seems like an easy question, but Adam knows from experience that life is seldom simple, and the world seldom cooperates with hope, faith, or the plans of cats and men.

This is a fun and sweet story that really lights up your heart. With a little Pixy Stix magic you meet Adam who really pulls your heartstrings. He is a little down on luck when life has slapped him down one too many times at the age of 27. When he stumbles into Candy Heaven and into a much needed job you get to meet Darrin. A gay Magical Willy Wonka who is a little like a fairy god father to those who work for him. (You kinda wish he was yours as well he is just that good) He sees the need in Adam and since the Pixy Stix never lies welcomes Adam into the fold and pushes him in the direction of Finn. Finn is 24, fun loving and carefree. He’s never had life stomp on his heart and he is just what Adam needs to learn that alone isn’t always better. You just want a Finn of your own to hug and squeeze!

Adam struggles to accept the friendship and care that Finn so easily wants to give to him. Finn however is persistent and you just love him for it! But Adam does have real issues that he needs to deal with and with the friendship he finds in his co-workers, Darrin and Finn he slowly gets his life back on track after a few hurtles. Finn and Adam have a very evident connection and some rather steamy moments along the way. The secondary characters in this book make me excited for more stories about the family who work at Candy Heaven and maybe the Magical Willy Wonka Darrin who is their ring leader. From the first chapter I was caught up and couldn’t put this book down. I plan to read the other stories in this series

**AUDIOBOOK REVIEW**

This was definitely one of the lower angst books I’ve listened to by
Amy Lane. Normally I’m not a big fan of sweet romances, but she made
this one work.

This was a slow starting story to me as we learned what was going on
and how it all started at the candy store, but once it got going I was
much more interested in it as a whole.

Can’t say it was my favorite Amy Lane book, but it certainly wasn’t
bad either. Finn was the saving grace of this book for me. His light
was just spectacular. He was determined to help Adam deal with his
past hurts and it was just sweet and nice and made the whole story
come together.

While i loved the actual story itself, I have to say that I felt like
the narration actually took away from it. It was a bit over the top
for me. It felt too forced at times when it didn’t feel like that’s
what was needed in a particular scene.
