5 Star Review for A Crane Christmas (The Morelville Mysteries #6) by Anne Hagan #FF #Mystery

Title: A Crane Christmas (The Morvelville Mysteries #6)
Author Name & Publisher: Anne Hagan (Jug Run Press)
Publication Date & Length: December 16, 2015 – 148 pgs

Is it the Christmas season or the ‘silly season’?

All Sheriff Mel wants to do is close out the year and spend a joyful first Christmas with Dana and with their extended families. She’s even hired a new detective, Janet Mason, to ease some of the workload for her and her only other detective, Shane Harding. Things were shaping up great for her and Dana for a relaxing holiday season. Too bad it just wasn’t meant to be…

The local criminals want it all too and a string of burglaries in high class county enclaves have Mel and both of her detectives stymied. Throw in a bunch of disappearing dogs, some designer sheep, a lonely woman and an unsolved murder case, and the good guys are at their wits end. Meanwhile, back in tiny little Morelville, things aren’t much better; the village is buzzing over Dana’s family taking over the store but Dana herself isn’t so sure that’s a good thing.

Can Mel and her team resolve everything before Christmas dinner comes out of the oven? Will Janet Mason fit in at all? Will Dana find a balance between work and family that works for her in time to enjoy her first Christmas with Mel?

This book is great together with Books 1-5 to get all of the Dana and Mel back story but it can also be read as a stand-alone mystery.

At first I thought this novel was not as exciting as others in the series but as I read and subsequently finished I realised that this book was different, but in a positive way. It moves at a slower pace, new characters are introduced and we are familiarized with some of the former characters lives.
What I liked and what makes this novel stand out from other novels in this genre is the normality of it. Mel and Dana are just treated like any other couple, the novel revolves around their lives and problems they face at home and at work. Ms Hagen ensures that this mystery is just about solving the conundrum the couple have to unravel and not about their sexuality. The complete consuetude of their relationship is a refreshing change to read and to enjoy.
Once again the duo had to fathom out various quandaries and dilemmas and it is not until the end that the mystery is brought together and all the clues make sense. Ms Hagan is a consummate professional at uniting all the strands of the plot and fitting them together like a well formed jig saw puzzle.
A stand alone mystery but part of the Moreville series this is yet another one in this enthralling series that I can heartily recommend.
