ER physician’s assistant Hunter guards his heart carefully, but that doesn’t stop him from falling for Shawn, the front desk clerk. He keeps his distance from relationships for a reason, but just can’t help himself when it comes to Shawn.

Shawn is on the run from the law and love to protect himself and anyone else involved. One man is dead because of him, and his life now is simple and easily thrown into a bag at any hint of danger— until he meets Hunter and he no longer wants to run.

Forced into a hostage situation, buried passion explodes in the aftermath, and sex in the supply closet brings their hearts back to life. Tentatively, step by step, they begin to explore a relationship together until the past catches up with Shawn.

This book blew me away. So much happened in such short amount of time.

Hunter works in the ER and has a huge crush on Shawn which works at the ER check in desk. Shawn also has a huge crush on Hunter but Shawn has secrets. Secrets that could get both of them killed if he was to peruse a relationship with Hunter. After some pretty intense events that happens in the ER that both men are involved in Shawn finally gives in to his crush on Hunter. And that is when the events of this book truly start to fall into place.

This is a book with twist and turns. There is no way to know who the good guy is and who the bad guy is. And just when you have it all figured out there is another twist.

As i said this book blew me away. The only thing that I can say is that I hope there will be a follow up book. It ended rather quickly and left unanswered questions. Like was there a conviction and did Hunter and Shawn make it out together and last but not least what did Shawn (aka Alex) do about the job offer that he was given. So really hope there will be a book 2.

Other then that it was an amazing book. I truly enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more books by Heloise West.

For me, this was a bizarre, completely implausible story where a simple crush on the new hospital admin assistant somehow turns into a cross country run from the mob and FBI double agents.

I found the pace of this story uneven and the character development awkward. And the editing! At one point, early in the book, a typo actually gives away a character’s second identity, causing immediate confusion and later let-down. The romance in this story worked at times, but it felt a little bit instalove, then hot and cold to keep the plot moving. I enjoyed Hunter at the start and I came to like Shawn/Alex at the end, but neither man was entirely memorable.

Moving between narrative voices and moving back and forth in time takes a certain amount of skill. I felt like this story just lurched awkwardly between perspectives. Shawn/Alex’s backstory left me feeling dizzy and confused, as did the FBI double agent story. Even by the end, I was trying to keep characters straight and figure out who the goodies and baddies were.

So, while this had some exciting parts and a little romance, it wasn’t a favourite. The m/m genre has come a long way with action and adventure stories and I’d recommend readers look to writers like Abigail Roux, Charlie Cochet, SE Jakes and Kindle Alexander for stories of action, adventure and romance before looking to this one.

ExcerptIt was nine o’clock. They’d long lost the reservation. Hunter turned away from the warm lights of the restaurant, heart heavy. Shawn was too good to be true. For all he knew, he had a problem like Jerry’s, who’d often left him waiting, wondering, and ultimately fearing as dinner sat cold on the table. He gave in and took a step toward home.

He whipped around.

Shawn rushed toward him. He slipped on the snowy sidewalk, nearly going down, but Hunter ran at him, and they crashed together so hard his teeth clicked. Shawn’s arms went around him and his around Shawn, and they managed to hold each other up.

“I’m sorry,” were the first words out of Shawn’s mouth.

“All you deserve is pizza crusts,” Hunter mock-growled and kissed him, unconsciously trying to taste booze on his breath. Like Jerry and too many broken promises. Relieved it was only peppermint mouthwash, he didn’t stop kissing him.

When Hunter let him speak, Shawn said, “I’m starving, I’ll take it.” He pushed Hunter a little away from him. “Jesus. You’re freezing.”

“And starving. There’s a Greek pizza place down this way, come on—”

“I’ll make it up to you,” he said, taking Hunter’s hand.
