Title: Among the Living (PsyCop #1)
Author Name & Publisher: Jordan Castillo Price
Publication Date & Length: October 18, 2008 – 89 pgs
Victor Bayne, the psychic half of a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who’s more concerned with flying under the radar than in making waves.
He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or “Stiff”) from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner’s retirement party and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces who can change his appearance to match any witness’ idea of the world’s hottest guy.
Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer’s not leaving any spirits behind.
This is a novella, but it doesn’t feel short. Not everyone can get away with writing a novella and leaving the reader satisfied. But this author accomplishes that, and has you wanting more, but not feeling cheated out of a full-length book.
You are treated to a very detailed and interesting story, that contains some paranormal, with Vic and Jacob. I loved the Psychic aspect. From a few pages in, the intensity between these two Hero’s is scorching!!!! During any part of this story, you could close your eyes and feel like you were right there.. in the middle of whatever was going on. And WANTING to be right there during the naughty times!! *phew*
I enjoy author’s who take their writing seriously, and give us a memorable Journey, with characters that captivate you. Jordan Castillo Price does this, and I can’t wait to read more by this author!!
I found this story incredibly interesting. It was different and had me guessing until the end what was really going on… Who WAS the murderer.. Oh but not until the end did we actually find out.
I listened to the book in one day because I just had to know. It was fast paced and not one moment felt like it didn’t belong or move the story along.
The men’s chemistry was awesome as well as their interaction with secondary characters believable.
The narrator did an awesome job of bringing the characters to live while keeping the reader engaged and not nodding off. Each character had their own distinct voice that let you know who was speaking even if their name hadn’t been spoken.
All around a great book with a great narrator.
Jacob Marks and Victor Bayne have a wonderful working chemistry. Marks is a dominant, protector type and while Victor is not a wilting flower, he seems much more delicate.I really enjoyed reading about how the Psycop department works. It had a good mystery and I also really enjoyed the supporting characters. I really want to know about Gutierrez’s and Carolyn’s journeys as well. I wish that this novella was more of a novel. The romance was a little rushed for me – the scenes were quick – hot but quick and it seemed that they were more in lust rather than a blossoming romance.
I can’t wait to read more about this unique law enforcement department, but I am hopeful for more development within the characters.
