4 Stars for Discovery (Drakyl Ranch #1) by Thianna Durston (AUTHOR INTERVIEW) #MM #Paranormal @the_weremouse

Title: Discovery (Drakyl Ranch #1)
Author Name: Thianna Durston
Publication Date: September 1, 2015

Warning: This book is a paranormal m/m romance with some horror elements. It also crosses cowboy and vampire genres. If you don’t think cowboys look hot with fangs, you’re missing out.

Living in Montana and working the ranch is all Aaron wants to do for the rest of his life. Diagnosed as allergic to the sun thirteen years previous, every day is a struggle to get out of bed. Having to wear long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and even material to cover his face from the effects of the sun, just makes it all worse. Now, in his thirty-second year, he is sure this will be his last summer. While he hates it, he knows he needs to come to terms with the truth and put things in order for his younger cousins. Before he does so, he heads out for one night of pleasure before facing what’s coming.

Jaret loves excitement and new adventures. For over five hundred years, he has sought them out. In Montana on a whim, he comes across someone he doesn’t expect, someone who makes him feel things he does not understand and does not want to give up. In no time at all, he feels like he cannot live without Aaron. The only problem is Aaron doesn’t know who he is, what he is, nor that he isn’t going to die. Not on Jaret’s watch. With a plan to help the other man discover who he is in place, he only has one thing to worry about: whether an ancient enemy will come and destroy everything he now holds dear.

I don’t know how I have not read this author before, but better late than never!!!! Wow. For a book under 200 pages, it pulled me in and kept my attention.
I like to step out of my “comfort reading zone” and explore new authors. Thianna Durston gives you such great details, you can’t help but believe the world they live in does exist and want to be a part of it.
I loved the chemistry between Jaret and Aaron. They were a sexy, intense duo who complimented each other perfectly!
I would read more in this series.

“You’re not going to die, Aaron.”

“You don’t know that. This sickness, ailment, curse…whatever the fuck it is. It’s gettin’ worse. And it’s changin’. Morphin’ into somethin’ scary. My nightmares lately have been horrible.”

“What kind of nightmares?” Of course, Jaret knew. They were the same kind all of them had during the change. Fire and ice as the body went through horrendous chills and soaring high fevers. They would only stop once the change was complete. For after that, there was no real sleep anymore.

“Bein’ caught on high mountains, pelted with snow. Of the forests here bright with orange fire. Of you—” His voice broke. “Callin’ out my name only I’m no longer here to respond.”

“Babe,” Jaret said in a soft voice, not understanding why but knowing he was closer to this drakyl than he had ever been to anyone. “We’re going to get you cured. Then you can come out with me at night. We’ll keep the place predator free while your cousins slave in the sun. How does that sound?”

A sad attempt at a laugh left the other man’s throat. “Promise me you won’t leave until I’m gone?”

Fury swept along Jaret’s veins. Anger at the sun, the fact the man next to him was terrified, and at Davis for not explaining to the poor man earlier what he was. But mostly, he was furious at himself for not telling Aaron the truth. Leaning in, he placed his nose against Aaron’s. “I promise you,” he said in a deep growl, “that you are not going to die, Aaron Drakyl. I won’t let it happen.”

1) Can you describe in detail what your writing environment is like?

My office space is eclectic. I can’t write in a perfectly ordered room. So my desk has my computer, my tablet, an unfinished manuscript over there (points to the left where the papers are half off the desk and slowly slipping), my earphones and mic right in front of me (points to the lump underneath the bubble wrap I use as a destresser). Oh, and a shungite stone is right next to my computer to help mediate the effects of technology.

Behind me is a calendar of a Chihuahua – My favorite dogs 🙂 Around the room I have draped twinkly lights because sometimes I like to write with the overhead light and sometimes I like a more personal atmosphere.

2) Is there one of your characters that you relate to (from any of your works)? Why?

At least one character in every book has a bit of me in them. From Jaret in Discovery who loves to travel and see new things to Christian in All They Ever Needed who suffers from PTSD. Our forms of PTSD are different, but when it comes down…the effects are similar.

3) If you couldn’t be an author, what would you do instead?

If I could choose anything? A time traveler who can also cross space because I love to see new places and new people.

4) Is there anything that you learned during the writing process that you wish you had known before hand?

I’ve been a pantser forever and right now I’m ‘learning’ to plot a little. While I am glad of my pantser style, it would have been nice to learn to plot earlier on. The problem is my muse hates it when I plot as he thinks that means I’m trying to guide the story instead of letting him do it. Even if I tell him he can do the plotting. My muse is rather opinionated 😀

5) Is there anything that you wish you could change about your book now that it is out?

Only that I wish I had the rest of them all complete. It’s now a battle against the clock to get all the drafts done so I can start the real editing of the next ones in the series.

6) How do you come up with new ideas for your story?

For the most part, it’s from the ether. I’ll sit down, put my fingers to the keyboard and the words flow. However, the shower also seems to create plot bunnies. This morning, a plot bunny popped into my head and I had the first chapter fleshed out in my head before I was out of the bathroom. That’s great, except now I can’t remember exactly all the wonderful words that went through my head.

7) What’s next for you as a writer?

I have a goal of finishing 16 novels and one novella for myself in the next year. It’s an insane schedule but that’s the kind of challenge I like to set for myself. The Drakyl Ranch series will hopefully be finished so I can release then 2-3 months apart. I’ve also got a M/M contemporary romance series called The Men of Falcon Pointe that will debut in Nov/Dec with the second book coming out in Feb/March. Besides those two huge series which are on my mind constantly, I’ve got several books I’ve also got in the plans. It’ll definitely keep me busy.

8) Where do you live? Do you think this influences how or what you write?

I live in the wine country part of the Pacific NorthWest. We don’t have a lot of trees. Living here does give me a feeling of home which is why I’ve set two of my series in the state of Washington, but overall, I don’t think it influences what I write. I’ve lived all over the western part of the US so it’s probably more correct to say all of those states have just as much influence.

9) What is your favorite genre outside of the one you write in? Why?

My favorite genre to read that I rarely write in is fantasy. I love unicorns and faeries and magic. Add in a dash of humor and I’m hooked.

10) Do you have any vices? Shoes, coffee, shopping…etc?

Ummm, none of the above. I hate shoes and only have one pair at a time – I’d go shoeless if I could. Not a coffee drinker. Can’t stand shopping. But I am a bibliophile. I have over 3500 books on my kindle app. If I had a large house, I’d have bookshelves everywhere with paperback and hardback books falling out of them. There would be reading sofas everywhere. So I guess my vice is my love of books. I would rather read or write than do anything including eating.

Thianna loves to write strong stories with even stronger heroes. While all of her books have an erotic overtone, it is the story that is the most important to her. “The story should be able to stand on its own. The erotic elements are an add-on.”

She enjoys writing about couples with kink, paranormal couples, and straight out strangeness. But more on that later… You can find her at mm.thiannad.com.

She also writes m/f under the name Thianna D.
