Title: The First Time
Author Name & Publisher: Caraway Carter (MLR Press)
Publication Date & Length: December 24th 2015- 109 pages
After surviving through a massive earthquake, Anders and Ujaruk know they can handle a crisis, but what about everyday life? Ujaruk moved in to help Anders while his leg healed, now that the cast is off, what happens next? Families, holidays and the first time.
The book picked up where Anders & Ujaruk (Storming Love Earthquake 4) left off. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book deals with many different issues that seem to face these two men after their whirl-wind romance left off and it was great to catch up with them and see where the author took them. It was a romance with a lot of drama and I find that I enjoy those every once in a while. Mr. Carter is a very good writer and that made this an easy read and very enjoyable.
I had previously read the Earthquake series in which Anders and Ujaruk firstappeared, and their story was by far my favorite. So I was excited to see a follow-up. I hate to say it, but I was a little let down. It was still well-written, but it felt a bit rushed and left a few too many loose threads.
I was not really a fan of the emotional drama between Anders and Ujaruk. They both came across as whiny in their relationship, and Ujaruk seemed somewhat immature for a college professor in his thirties. There were some cute moments, but it seemed a bit forced to me and read like filler for the real meat of the story.
The best parts were the non-romance aspects (which is actually what I loved about the first novella). The tension about what was going on with Anders’ leg and Ujaruk’s job interview with the prejudiced committee were excellent and very well done. I’d have liked to see more of those moments. I also liked Ujaruk’s mother, and the scene between her and Anders was one of my favorite parts.
I think ultimately, the problem is more with me than with the story. I simply prefer a book with less romance-drama and more plot. I’m sure there are other readers for whom this is a perfect choice.
