Cor is a member of the Assassin’s Guild and is sought out by Kila to kill her brother for her. She claims her brother raped her so Cor has no problem taking the case on. She also has her own reasons for wanting to leave her life behind and go somewhere very far away. She is persona non grata among the Guild and fears for her life.
The story is a sci-fi romance and the romance part of it was interesting. I sometimes found the sci-fi parts a bit overblown. I was tempted to skip over some of it to get to the good stuff. And there certainly is some good stuff in there. Adventure a-plenty mixed in with some religious mysticism makes it a decent enough read but I cant say I was gripped by it.

Can I say I found this novel difficult to categorize, thought it included lesbian romance but not sure it fits into that category. It is however a really fast paced, at times exciting at other times thought provoking novel.
At all times this novel is superbly written, the brilliant detail of events, characters and settings takes the reader into the actual realms of the novel, you see the people you smell the surroundings, everything is vividly detailed making it totally believable.
Being written in the first person gives this novel a very edgy feel. The sci fi terms give it reality.
So why did I not award this novel 5 stars? Despite everything I could not relate to the lead character. The romantic interlude came secondary to everything else and although two women were involved in the sojourn a man makes an entry at a critical stage! I found the mystic elements of the novel heavy going in places and at times detracting from the action.
However nothing can detract from a scintillating tale which is beautifully crafted.
FiveStarsThis book just seemed to have everything, and it all came together perfectly. The world-building was good and consistent. The characters were interesting with flaws and imperfections that they tried to work on and better. The pace was fast, each scene building to the next, heightening the tension and making me want to turn the pages faster and faster. Just a greatly enjoyable read. I believe this is book one, since the person behind the attacks on the Chosen one was never discovered. And if so, I greatly look forward to the next book in the series.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Kila might not pose a threat, but she was not what she appeared to be.

She pulled the covers from me and examined the wound on my arm. It showed no signs of infection. She’d done a good job, a better job than a barmaid should have.

My eyelids grew heavier. The room became dim, and I blinked to clear my vision. “You’ve had medical training.”

“You could say that.” She wrapped the blankets around me and tucked them in like a mother for her child. Something about her made me feel warm and safe. I fought to shake it off.

“What else could I say? Who are you?” I demanded.

She smiled cryptically. “I’m the least important member of my family. Not like you.”

I scowled at her. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?” My voice rose and fell in my ears, echoing in a disconcerting manner.

She turned away from me, instead facing my table, the bag, the book. “You are Corianne Sandros, the Core of Sardonen. And I want to hire you to kill my brother.”
