Synopsis

Wanting to end his pattern of choosing controlling and abusive men, Vladimir ‘Val’ Mihalic figures it’s better to live alone than live in fear. Just when things are settling down—his biggest trouble recently is a Kentucky Derby hopeful that won’t load into a starting gate—his best friend Janelle’s violent ex-boyfriend kidnaps her. After she’s seriously injured in a car wreck, Wyatt Harig, Janelle’s estranged father, comes around to tend to his daughter. Despite Val’s determination to avoid relationships, Wyatt interests him in ways that make his resolve waver. As complications and repercussions pile on in the aftermath of Janelle’s kidnapping—including a gambling charge and a murder—Wyatt and Val must work together to seek answers. And the closer they get to each other, the more Val wants them to stay that way.

fourstars

In Kentucky’s horse country, murder and intrigue surround the horses, riders and owners preparing for the Derby. IT technician Val and jockey Janelle are best friends working on a horse farm.  When Janelle is badly injured, Val and Janelle’s father Wyatt must uncover the truth behind her accident.  But Val just can’t help his attraction to the older man…

This is an exciting, whirlwind tour of the horseracing industry.  The author has researched the racing world carefully for this suspenseful murder-mystery story.  Her Kentucky farmland is an eerily idylic setting for the gruesome goings on.  Val’s isolated cottage is way too spooky late at night!

All three characters are well drawn.  Val’s relationships with his dogs and his horse were brilliant, Val and Janelle’s relationship was very sweet, and the back stories for all three characters are carefully constructed.   This is ultimately Val’s story and he is revealed to us very slowly as the story progresses.  I like Wyatt as a character, but I’m not sure I love the inter-generational romance, especially as Janelle is like a sister to Val.  I also struggled to believe in Wyatt and Janelle’s relationship.

Ultimately, this is a great suspense story.  There are romantic moments, but this is a mystery.   The plot is complex and I found myself flipping back through the book to pick up tiny details I missed on the first read.  I’d recommend it for horse lovers and suspense readers who enjoy a little bit of m/m romance.

FiveStarsWOW!!! What an amazing story.  This was the most beautiful love story and the most thrilling, tragic, suspenseful story.  I couldn’t stop reading it. Most of the time I can usually figure out how the story is going to go, but not with this one. This one knocked me for a loop with all the twists, turns, and secrets. Wow!  The writing was so descriptive and explosive.

Micah and Chris were the main characters.  I loved them both.
They were both so damaged.  Kit so lonely and treated so badly by so many.  Micah was amazing, I thought he was so compassionate and his love for Chris was unbelievable.  They both had so much tragedy in their lives, yet they saved each other.  Sam was so loyal to Chris and  all of the secondary characters added so much to the story.

Absolutely an amazing, wonderfully written story.  If I could rate it more than 5 Stars I would.

~Sherry

FiveStars

This is Mercy Celeste at her best; maybe even her best yet.

Micah Beasley, US Marine turned US Marshal, is suffering from PTSD and recovering from disfiguring injuries when he accepts a job as a bodyguard to a wealthy recluse.

Christopher Auberon, an agoraphobic, mute, savant, billionaire, is also suffering from PTSD. But he is almost certain there is actually someone trying to kill him.

Micah finds his young employer strange and slightly terrifying. When the threat to Kit’s life becomes very real, Micah, or Beastly as Kit calls him, must put his own problems aside to protect his charge.

Suspense is a new genre for Mercy Celeste and she does it well. It is impossible not to think of The Shining when horrible things start happening in an enormous, isolated mansion.   This is also a psychological thriller. Characters are wrapped in layers of secrets that Celeste unravels very slowly. None of the characters is who they first appear to be and more than one secret is sinister. This is not a book to read while home alone on a dark, stormy night.

I really don’t want to give away very much while I praise the book. Mercy Celeste’s characters are beautifully crafted. The plot is well paced and precisely constructed.

Celeste hasn’t abandoned romance, or sex, but she uses more intimate scenes to carefully develop her characters and her plot.   She manages to make a couple of scenes both unbelievably hot and unnervingly eerie.

I love this. If you love beautiful, damaged men and a scary story, you’ll love it too.

This story was a strange one for me. I felt that I was missing parts throughout the story.
Take the background of Hazel – she hints at having a family that is not very supportive, but we never really figure out why that is. Rather, it seems that it was kind of slipped in there to create more problems or instances for self-flagellation by Hazel.
Then, you have Ward and Dylan’s relationship. It seems to be more of a mystery. We know that they had a relationship, but was it just a D/S relationship for training or was it more?
I was definitely intrigued by the mystery bad guy in the story and hope in the next installment that we learn more about that aspect of the story.

I’ve read a number of Ms. Vitsky’s books, and each time, I think I couldn’t possibly love it more than the last one, only to be proven wrong.

This is a gentle, tender story about the ways our own raw places can unintentionally wound the people we love most. Ciara’s fear of rejection by her family is palpable. Even though the story is in first person from her POV, Audra’s emotions are also tangible. What I liked, though, was that it never dipped into emotional drama just for the sake of forcing a reaction. The feelings were realistic.

One of my favorite things Ms. Vitsky does in her work is examining the interplay of repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation. These are deeply human and deeply spiritual themes, and she’s excellent at viewing different angles. In this story, part of what makes it so good is when the characters’ hidden reasons for their actions rise to the surface and they have the chance to understand each other. I was actually surprised by the ending, but I thought it was a perfect fit.

If you want a very quick read that will warm your heart while making you think, this is perfect.

The beginning of this book was a bit rough for me as the author set up for the story. I think there was a bit of jumping from present to past tense and it made it hard to get into… But I made it through…
When the Mistress takes over and we get to hear her story with Vanessa, it was great and I couldn’t read fast enough!!
Although I would complain in the beginning how Mistress wants her name kept private, which I completely understand, I also could accept if something along the lines of ‘well just call her…’ and a fake name given to her. I think it would’ve made more reliable to the reader than Mistress A.
I also would love to read the story expanded into a full length novel with things not so glossed over, like what exactly Mistress did when she was at her club and various clients (with fake names of course) or what other things she did with Vanessa to help really relate it to the BDSM world since this short story really only had Vanessa bound for a very short part of it… Oh and the ceremony Vanessa was a helping hand in, which was well written and I would’ve loved to read more like that as we got an insight to some of the things Mistress had seen and how she felt about it.
Renee
FourStarsThis was a fantastic short story. Kind of unerotic BDSM, the side that we really should all get to know before delving into erotic BDSM. This is what I imagine the real BDSM word to be like 90% of the time, not what we read in many many novels. I was thrown off by the start of this piece. It was strange to me to read the interviewers perspective and then switch into story mode, but as soon as we got into story mode, the words flowed off the pages.
I would love to see this as a fully expanded novel. And as Jordan points out, she should.

I loved the story line and the way Patricia wrote the characters. They were very believable and realistic. This is the first of Patricia Logan’s books I’ve read and/or listened to and I must say I can’t wait to read more of her books. I will say that there were parts that had a lot of repetitious words and it would make me have to stop and listen to a part again or at least impeded the flow of the story.
The audiobook was very well done. Although there were times I didn’t exactly care for the narrators tone as he changed between characters. In particular, the airhead secretary. He’d occasionally use the same tone and it made me cringe, although I suspect part of that was part of the idea behind the secretary, it was the other times that it came out that distracted me from the story.
Overall, I would love to read Patricia’s books and listen to the narrator again. It was a great book to listen to.
Renee
FourandHalfStars

Cassidy Ryan is a beautiful blonde homicide detective hunting a twisted serial killer.  Zachary Teak is  a professional Dom running an online BDSM club.  When the investigation takes Cassidy to Zack’s club, the detective doesn’t quite know whether to arrest Zach for murder or let the Dom fuck him.

This is the first suspense story I’ve read from Patricia Logan and I loved it.  The men are hot, the murders are grizzly, the clues are carefully constructed and the murderer remains elusive.  Supporting characters are well developed and there are brief cameo appearances from other Logan men.

The relationship between Zack and Cassidy is perilous.  Zack might be a serial killer – he is a professional sex worker – and Cassidy knows he should stay away.   But Zack helps Cassidy understand his naturally submissive nature and makes him feel cared for.

Patricia Logan writes Cassidy’s initiation into the BDSM lifestyle perfectly.  The scenes are hot and sometimes intense, but Logan initiates her readers just as carefully as Master Z prepares the good detective.  This is a very sexy BDSM 101!

The only thing keeping this from a 5* rating is the ending.  What starts as a murder mystery with a touch of romance becomes a romance where one character happens to be a detective.  After following Detective Ryan’s case from the initial crime scenes, I expected more of a climactic ending.

This book was so amazing I just couldn’t  put it d own. The writing was so descriptive you could visualize everything.  Besides the gruesome murder plot we are also taken into the life of a Dom.  The murders in  themselves were a great story, very detailed, kept you guessing till the reveal.  The life of the Dom had to take some investigating into, to make it seem so real.  The sex scenes were very hot!

Zach was the Dom and I found him very tender and loving to his subs.  Cassidy, so negative at the beginning.  But it was so touching how he was willing to try new things with  Zach even though he was scared.  He trusted Zach not to hurt him, that just made them feel so real. I loved how intense the author made the vibes that passed between them.

There was only one thing that bugged me, it was the reference “boy” that Zach called Cassidy.  Even though I personally didn’t like that,  it didn’t change my mind that this book deserves 5 stars.  Patricia Logan  excelled at telling this story, I totally enjoyed it.

Excerpt

Cassidy finally relented, looking side to side to assure that he was alone as he reached down, unzipping his slacks, and pulling out his hard cock. He looked down, noting that he was swollen and red, the circumcised head leaking precome down the length of his shaft as he began to stroke it.

“Does it turn you on, Detective? I’d love to do a scene with you, Detective.” Zachary Teak’s sexy voice played in his head as his hand sped faster, pumping him closer and closer to the orgasm which was just out of his reach. Cassidy opened his mouth, panting. He suddenly imagined himself laid over that vault-like device, tied down while Teak fucked him, harder and harder, holding him in the middle of his back with one hand and pulling on his cock with the other. He pictured Teak’s orgasm roaring over him, feeling the man’s dick throb in his well-abused ass, his own cock spilling on the floor beneath them at the same time.

With a gasp, Cassidy came, shooting so high, that he hit the steering wheel. Cassidy milked his orgasm, looking down at the mess he was making in the car, praying that he didn’t get any of his spunk on his suit pants.

ThreeStar

Gage Mitchell only manages to escape an abusive childhood when he is offered a job at Heath Farm on the day both his parents are taken to jail. He spends years working hard on the farm and studying hard to become a veterinarian.

Brian Stockwell grew up as a well loved only child.  As a young adult he has had a string of short, meaningless relationships with several men.

When they meet, Gage needs to learn to trust and Brian has to learn how to be in a relationship.

Kelley introduces a bewildering series of characters that form Gage and Brian’s family, some by birth and most through friendships.  A few characters are well drawn, but most remain one dimensional.

I kept feeling that I should feel more for Gage as he suffers and grieves, but he never became real for me.  I also find it difficult to believe in the relationship between the two young men.  Possibly because they are so young.  Can a HEA at twenty ever be fully plausible?

Finally, this book needs a thorough edit.  There are technical errors and a few awkward plot jumps, which make the story difficult to get into.  A good Beta reader could really help this become a great story.
